Museum of Science and Industry Challenge
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago had a high profile, one-of-a-kind U-boat/artifact that was rusting away outside of the main building. MSI has had over 2 million visitors since the exhibit opened in 1954 and wanted to “breathe new life” into the exhibit and to tell the dramatic story associated with its capture.
How Iona Helped
The U-505’s story needed to be told in a compelling and engaging way that provided the visitor a context for the significance of this exhibit. After weeks of gathering footage at the National Archives in Washington D.C. and shooting a vintage WWII F4F Wildcat over the Pacific Ocean, Iona told the story as it has never been told before. Iona worked closely with MSI to assure historical accuracy throughout the process. All of the video and audio elements of the “New U-505 Experience” were produced by Iona.
Connection Made
The description “World Class” is exactly how the exhibit has been described. From the mayor of Chicago to the surviving sailors who participated in the capture to the youngest of school children the response has been overwhelmingly positive and emotional. Visitors understand the importance of the Allied victory as well as the tremendous sacrifice made by so many for a cause greater than themselves.
